Gas torches for soldering pipes and repairs

Soldering does not need a big flame but a focused one. A gas torch with a jet flame blows the butane out under pressure, so you put the heat exactly on the joint and not on everything around it.

For soft soldering on a copper pipe that is more than enough. The choice lies in the flame strength, whether you can lock it, and whether the nozzle reaches the pipe.

Which gas torch do you use for soldering?

A yellow flame heats a wide area and leaves soot on the copper, so the solder bonds less well. A blue jet flame burns clean and puts the heat on a small area, so the joint comes up to temperature quickly and the pipe around it stays cool.

How hot does it need to get

Soft soldering on a copper water pipe happens at a few hundred degrees, and a butane torch manages that easily. For brazing thicker material you need a different fuel; butane does not get there.

Being able to lock the flame

Soldering needs two hands: one for the torch and one for the solder. A lock that keeps the flame burning without pressing the button is therefore not a luxury but a necessity.

Reaching the pipe

Pipes often sit against a wall or in a corner. Look at the length of the nozzle and at models that stay upright, so you can put the torch down in between without switching it off.

Tip

Never work with an open flame right next to insulation or wood without a heat shield, and keep something to extinguish with at hand. Refill the torch with butane gas at 45 PSI.

Can you solder a copper pipe with a gas torch?
